Ascent Reader help
Answers to common questions. New to the reader? Start with Getting started.
Opening the reader
Open the browser menu and tap Reader mode. The reader's own bottom bar has Shelf, Updates, History, Discover and More; Browser returns to your tabs.
Translating pages
While reading, show the menu and tap the translate icon to turn translation on or off. Press and hold the icon to choose the language the pages are written in and the language to translate them into.
- Choose the source language when you know it. It decides which text recogniser reads the page, and gives the best results for Japanese, Chinese and Korean.
- The first time a Chinese, Japanese or Korean page is translated, Google Play services downloads the recogniser. Until it arrives pages stay in the original; they translate on their own once it has.
- Translation settings, including the engine, are shared with the browser's Translate settings.
Reading modes
New series open in Long strip, a continuous vertical page. Change the mode for one series from the reader's settings sheet, or the default in More → Settings → Reader.
Library updates and errors
Library updates check your shelf for new chapters. When some series fail, the notification links to a list of errors. Common causes:
- The source is down or has changed. Open the series in WebView (the globe icon) to see whether the site loads. If it has moved, update the extension, or migrate the series to another source.
- Too many requests. Some sites limit how fast pages can be fetched. Update fewer series at once, or wait and try again.
- A Cloudflare check. See below.
- The extension is outdated or was removed. Check Discover → Extensions for updates.
"Cloudflare" and "Failed to bypass" errors
Some sites put a check in front of their pages. The reader can pass it only after the check has been completed once in a real browser view:
- Open the series or the source, then tap WebView.
- Wait for the site to load, and complete the check if one appears.
- Go back and pull down to refresh.
If it keeps failing, the site may be blocking automated access for a while; try again later, on another network, or with the source's own website in the browser.
Downloads
Download chapters from a series page to read them offline. They are saved in the reader's folder; see Storage. Downloads pause without a connection and resume when one returns.
Sources and extensions
Ascent Reader does not come with any sources. Sources come from extensions, which come from repositories you add yourself. See Getting started. Ascent does not host, provide or endorse any content; you are responsible for what you add and read.
